Important Information about New Diesels
New diesels engines are drastically different
than old diesel engines.
European vehicles from Volkswagen, Mercedes,
and BMW have all the refinement you would expect in a luxury
car. American and Japanese offerings have improved greatly
also.
Today’s diesel engines have:
- Cleaner exhaust than old engines. The California Air Resources
Board (CARB) has programs to buy old diesels and replace
them with new ones. These new engines make drastic improvements
in their emissions.
- More Power and acceleration than the older diesels.
- Better Fuel economy. The Volkswagen Lupo, which is available
only in Europe, gets up to 80 miles per gallon on diesel
and Biodiesel. A 2004 Volkswagen Jetta diesel is rated at
38/42 mpg.
- More refinement. Many American made diesels are still
quite noisy, but luxury vehicles from Europe are quiet.
- Models such as the BMW 330 CD, 530 CD, and Volkswagen
Touareg, and Mercedes E320 CDI will delight the most discriminating
driver.
- Longevity. New diesel engines should last 250-500,000+
miles with regular maintenance.
- Biodiesel and biodiesel blends are fully compatible with
the latest Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) technology and
even low level blends (2%) ensure proper lubricity for the
fuel pump and injectors. When sulphur is removed from the
fuel, so are some of it's lubricating characteristics which
biodiesel replaces to ensures the engine runs smoothly.
- Opportunity exists for Diesel-Electric Hybrids[link to
] to get even better fuel economy.
Great cars and trucks with the opportunity to run on renewable
fuel make new diesels an attractive option for a new car
buyer.
